Illinois State Capitol

Completed in 1887, the Illinois Capitol underwent numerous renovations over the years that detracted from the grandeur of both the House and Senate chambers. The VHA team restored the integrity of these spaces through renovations such as the restoration of original millwork, including speakers, podiums and press boxes, and interior finishes, including plaster moldings and etched glass. To complement these historic elements, we designed period-accurate member desks and recreated light fixtures and carpet from historic photographs. State-of-the-art audio/video, voting and data systems were seamlessly integrated with these period finishes. To fully restore the House chamber, our team reconstructed a long-destroyed art glass lay light that was removed from the ceiling in the 1930s. VHA's work in the House and Senate chambers was awarded the American Institute of Architects' 2008 National Honor Award for Interior Architecture. Photographs 1-10 show the House chamber; 11-21 show the Senate chamber.
